Below is a link to a News Channel 8 video on the Verizon Pioneers collecting care packages for U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Verizon Pioneers collected the items during a training session on Friday in Reston, Va.

Brian Malina pitched the story to local media. News Channel 8 and FiOS 1 covered the event.

Volunteers Put Together Care Packages for Service Members Abroad

posted 6:52 pm Fri November 06, 2009 - RESTON, Va.
A group of volunteers took some time Friday to put together care packages for U.S. service members in Afghanistan and Iraq. They said it felt great to give back to the military community, especially after the horrifying events at Fort Hood.

"When you're over there basically all you think of is home," said David Bell, a volunteer.
The group volunteers from Verizon Telecom Pioneers made nearly 200 care packages for U.S. service members containing toothpaste, floss, shaving equipment and things like that and of course a lot of food items, said Stephen Kohn (vice-president) of Verizon Telecom Pioneers. The packages also include letters from school children and every letter has a personal touch. "You can see reflected in their letters admiration for keeping us safe," said Leni Herr, a volunteer.

David Bell served in desert storm with the Marines and still remembers opening each care package. "I actually have all the letters that I got when I was over there," he said.

As the volunteers packed up boxes, they learned more about what happened at Fort Hood. "I'm a veteran and I can't imagine that happening on a base I was on," said Philip Hahn, a volunteer.
Bell says seeing the country rally around the victims at Fort Hood and service members abroad makes Friday feel like the day after September 11, 2001.
"This is another attack on U.S. citizens but this is an attack on soldiers and as a Marine that hits kind of hard," he said.
Bell hopes the care packages send a message to the troops of thanks and support. "It kind of gives you an extra kick when you're serving your country," he said.

The director of this program is Darnell Childs located at 26-25 97th Street, East Elmhurst, NY, 11369. The children were excited to learn that Verizon's Telecom Pioneers had donated back packs and were looking forward to making good use of them. We spoke about the importance of volunteering and giving back to our community.

The executive director, Darnell Childs, along with his assistant shanel who both look forward to working with us in the future also noted that On Thanksgiving and Christmas they open their doors to feed the homeless and would love for the pioneers to assist in any way.
Needless to say the afternoon was nothing less then wonderfully rewarding for everyone. The picture above speaks for itself as the children show off their backpacks along with volunteer Sharon Brown.

9-11 a day that will live in infamy was remembered with  a day of service. Our Nova 5 chapter, councils and clubs participated in the preparing and distribution of hearty and much appreciated hot lunches provided by soup kitchens in the five boroughs of New York City to our brothers and sisters in our communities. The photo to the right captures our Queens, Whitman life member club at The Tabernacle Prayer food pantry, The wonderful everyday volunteers at the kitchens were more then happy to have us aboard serving some 276 brothers and sisters and the photo left shows life member pioneers in Staten Island.

EB 8 AND BX1 life member clubs partnered with Bronx council at Bronx council's past president, Marie Lopez's request to help with their P.O.T.S. (Part of the Solution) project. P.O.T.S. Manhattan council donated apples, bananas, pasta sauce. pasta, vegetables, crackers and various other caned goods. We assisted 12 families on this day, filling their bags or luggage with food supplies. Deacon J.D. Clark was very thankful for all the help and support. A special thank you goes out to all who volunteered herewith named, Cheryl Hayes, Eileen Palazzola, John Lynch, Lula Sisco, Melainie Carter and Elizabeth Grinage. Our appreciation to Stephanie Russo and Ron Spaulding for their contribution to this story.

We can only hope that such a tragic day in 2001 can never be forgotten but also to remember how we all came together, white, black, yellow or purple all as bother and sister to brother and sister in the true American spirit.

GOD BLESS AMERICA.   Moving flag
